After a relatively restful night's sleep, we had wonderful free breakfast at the hostel. The breakfast provided was very similar to the breakfast that was provided in Italy. Europeans take their breakfast very seriously! I love it. We left for Munich in the morning,. Using the nifty DB Navigator app (without which I wouldn't have been able to function in Germany), we knew what time and platform our train would be at. 01/05 09:50 FRANKFURT > MUENCHEN My first long train ride was exciting! I was glad we made reservations and found seats, otherwise we could have easily sat in someone else's spots. The train was very quick, smooth, and quiet. The German countryside was just as beautiful as the Italian countryside I remember loving so much. We arrived in Munich in the afternoon. Again, our hostel was close to the Hbf and we were able to drop off our luggage while we waited to check in. This hostel was much bigger than the hostel in Frankfurt. After dropping off our luggage, we walked around Munich! We found Marienplatz, the famous plaza in Munich with the giant glockenspiel. My brother's friend told us to try to find the plague that included Cincinnati as one of Munich's sister cities and we found it! We also climbed a lot of stairs to go up a tower in a church. Up there, we had a great view of Munich and the surrounding area. Next, we went into Englischer Garden and found the "surfer wave" that my brother's friend had also told us about. It's a wave in the river that runs through the park that surfers literally surf on! Too cool. After walking around, we ate dinner at a German place near our hostel. Yum! If I remember correctly, we also drank at the bar in the hostel. We talked to the bartenders as well as interesting people at the bar itself!

After landing and (luckily) receiving our luggage, we took a bus, then a train to the main station in Frankfurt (from now on I will abbreviate "main station" as "Hbf", an acronym for Hauptbahnof which means - you guessed it! - central station in German). Our hostel was a few minutes walk from the Hbf. After checking in, we forced ourselves to walk around Frankfurt to stay awake. The main thing I remember from walking around was the 20-30 mph winds, in addition to the beauty of the city. In the late afternoon, we came back to our hostel and waited for the free dinner served at 8pm. In the process, we fell asleep then woke up just in time. We went to bed early after planning our travels for the next day. My only image of that day is below!
Our trip commenced on Sunday, April 29th. Matt picked me up at 6:30am and we headed to Bruegger's Bagels (Leonardi da Veggie) and picked up breakfast for us two, as well as our friend Adam who we were dropping off in Akron on the way to Youngstown. In the car was also my cat Mira, who was so cute and quiet on the drive.
We arrived in Youngstown to a wonderful (vegetarian) meal made by his father, consisting of vegetarian chili, a veggie tray, and cornbread! We spent time with his parents, his grandma, and one of their closest family friends who I had met multiple times. They helped us to pack, while Mira got adjusted to her new environment and Archie, her brother. After a while, they drove us to the Pittsburgh airport, where our flight departed in the evening. We had a layover in Iceland in the middle of the night, then landed in Frankfurt (the next day) around 10:00 local time! Phew. |
AuthorIn May of 2018, my boyfriend Matt and I ventured to Europe for almost two weeks. For personal reasons, I want to document our travels here. Enjoy! |
